With the support of a number of students, a school district in California is expanding its Bible curriculum in public high schools.

In a 5-0 vote, the Chino Valley Unified School District agreed recently to extend its "Bible as/in Literature and History" course to both juniors and seniors in high school. In another unanimous vote last summer, the district had approved the course for seniors only.

Board president James Na, who envisioned the course, says that he was "highly impressed" by students and board members who voiced their support of the Bible course in the community's classrooms. He is convinced that young people need the Word of God to direct their lives.

James Na (Chino Valley)"And these young people should be not only taught but nurtured to be our future face of this nation, with understanding of our foundation as a Christian nation," he comments.

According to Na, around 25 high school students showed up during the board meeting at Woodcrest Junior High School in Ontario to voice their support for the Bible course. The school board president says the board was pleased to hear how the course has enriched the lives of the students as they recommended that it should be made available to other grades as well.

"They were also impressed to hear how this class actually had great impact on [the students'] learning, how it related to our American historical heritage," says Na. "They also talked about how it made changes in their lives...that they are valued and they can see the vision of their lives again."

Na says he highly recommends that similar Bible classes be adopted in other school districts around the region and in other states as well.

Under the Chino District's plan, students may take the course as an elective, fulfilling the general requirement for admission into California State University and the University of California.
